How to Unlock a PayPal Account

You can usually unlock your PayPal account by contacting PayPal directly.

PayPal.com is a convenient way to process online transactions with your a variety of payment methods like a bank account, debit card or credit card. However, suspicious activity, unverified online payments and failed login attempts can cause you to run into problems with it from time to time. If your PayPal account detects unusual account activity, or if it requires more information from you, it can lock or limit access your account. In some cases, it is for simple reasons like entering your password too many timeswhile trying to log into the PayPal website. But a locked PayPal account could also occur due to potential scams or fraudulent activity on your account. Whatever the reason, you can inquire with PayPal customer service or resolution center as to why your account was locked, and then you can follow the procedure to unlock it to send money, transfer money and access your PayPal balance.

Locked Account Inquiries

Go to the Contact Us page.

Enter your "Email address" or PayPal user name and "Password," or click the "Continue" button if you cannot access your account with them. If this will not work, you can sometimes recover your account via a linked phone number or by answering security questions.

Answer the questions and await a response from PayPal Support explaining to you why your account was locked and what you need to do to unlock it.

Unlocking the Account

Go to the PayPal page and click the "Contact Us" link (see Resources).

Enter the information as requested on the Help page.

Call the PayPal telephone number if required and supply the account information requested to unlock your personal account or business account.

  • Credit card or bank statement for the account linked to your PayPal account

  • Email address linked to your PayPal account
