How to Set Up Keyword Tags on Your Blogspot Blog
By David Nield
The Google-owned Blogger platform (also known as Blogspot) enables businesses to create a professional-looking Web presence for free using simple content management tools. One of the many features offered by Blogger is support for keyword tags accompanying blog posts. These tags enable posts to be grouped together and provide visitors another way of navigating the site or finding relevant information. Much of the tag management is done automatically by the underlying Blogger platform.
Log into Blogger and click on the title of the blog for which you wish to set up tags. If there is only one blog associated with your account, you will be taken directly to that blog's dashboard.
Click "New post" to compose a new post. Enter a post title, enter the post body as required and then click the "Labels" heading on the post tools to the right.
Type individual keyword tags one by one, entering a comma after each one. Existing tags already present on the blog are listed underneath and can be added with a single click.
Click "Publish" to publish the post to the blog. Blogger automatically adds the keyword tags (or labels) you've created to the blog's tag list.
Click "Posts" from the dashboard screen and then "Edit" under the relevant post to add keyword tags to posts that have already been published. As before, tags can be added via the "Labels" section to the right. Click "Update" to confirm.
Choose "Layout" from the main dashboard options to see the current template. Click "Edit" within the "Blog Posts" section, then tick the box marked "Labels:" if you wish tags to be displayed alongside each post. The "Labels:" heading can be edited if required. Use the "Arrange Items" box below to select where tags are shown. Click "Save" to confirm.
Click "Layout" and then "Add a Gadget" in any section of the blog to create a tag cloud. Select "Basics" and then "Labels" from the list. Configure the tag cloud as required using the options on screen and click "Save" to confirm. Click "Save arrangement" to publish the changes to your blog.
All posts matching a particular tag can be viewed via the URL "<blog URL>/search/label/<tag name>. " You may wish to create links to particular tags from the description box or another widget, for example.
There are no official rules governing how tags can be used. Consider how visitors will view your site and how posts might need to be grouped (e.g. news, clients, offers, shows) when creating new tags.
It's also possible to subscribe to blog feeds for particular tags using the URL "<blog URL>/feeds/posts/default/-/<tag name>" for Atom 1.0 feeds and "<blog URL>/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss/-/<tag name>" for RSS feeds.
