Text messaging has become the preferred method of communications for many people. Text messages are an excellent way to pass information that the receiver may later need to reference such as phone numbers, and addresses. If you need to send a text to an AT&T subscriber, AT&T provides a simple way to do so using your standard email client or service. Depending on your wireless plan, this can save you text-messaging fees.

Open your default email program or log in to your online email account.

Compose a new message. Bear in mind that text messages are limited to 160 characters. Longer messages will be broken into multiple text messages and can be hard to read.

Enter the address of the person to whom you want to send the message into the "To" field of the message. The recipient's email address for text messages is his 10-digit phone number (including the area code) and "@txt.att.net" (without quotes).

For example: [email protected]

Send the message like you would send any other email message.

Tips

Most major cellular providers offer a similar service. Check their websites for address details.

Recipients should be able to reply to the email via text message. The exact way to do so depends on their phone type, and users should consult the owner's manual of their particular phone model for exact instructions.

Since the email will be converted to an SMS text message, any attachments you include will be lost. Even though you are using email to send the message, you should still think in terms of a text message. Keep it short.
