If you have a Publisher file but no Microsoft Publisher with which to open it, the free OpenOffice app can save the day. You can convert the file for free to something compatible with OpenOffice and open it directly in OpenOffice. Although some of the formatting may need to be adjusted, all the text in the document will transfer over exactly as it appeared in the original file.

Go to Zamzar (link in Resources), a free online file converting website that can convert Microsoft Publisher files.

Click the "Choose files" button and select the Publisher file you want to convert from your computer's hard drive.

Select ".Doc" from the drop-down menu as the file type you want to convert the Publisher file to.

Enter the email address where you want to receive the converted file.

Click the "Convert" button to complete the conversion process.

Open the email inbox associated with the address you provided to Zamzar to download the converted Publisher file to your computer. Download the file to an easily-accessible location, such as the desktop or Documents folder.

Locate the downloaded file on the computer and right-click over the filename to open a pop-up menu.

Scroll down the pop-up menu and highlight "Open With" and select "Open Office Writer" from the secondary menu to open the converted file. If Open Office Writer isn't listed on the menu, select "Other" to pull up a more extensive list of program options.
