How to Open PPS Files Without PowerPoint
By Christina Shaffer
One of the advantages of receiving a PPS file from a colleague or client is the ability to view the presentation directly in “show mode” and avoid opening the Microsoft PowerPoint interface. If you’re out of the office and need to access the slideshow on a PC that doesn’t include PowerPoint, you can open the file by using Microsoft’s free PowerPoint Viewer application. Alternatively, you can install a third-party program such as OpenOffice or XnView.
PowerPoint Viewer
Download and install the PowerPoint Viewer application in the Microsoft Download Center (link in Resources).
Launch the program when the installation process completes. Windows Explorer opens automatically.
Open the folder that contains the PowerPoint presentation you want to view. Select the PPS file, and then click “Open.” The presentation opens automatically.
OpenOffice
Download and install OpenOffice (link in Resources).
Launch OpenOffice, click the “File” tab, and then select “Open.”
Locate and double-click on the PPS file you want to view. The presentation opens automatically in the program.
XnView
Download and install XnView (link in Resources).
Launch XnView.
Scroll through the Folders navigation pane and open the folder that contains the PPS file. A list of files saved in the folder appears in thumbnail format.
Double-click the thumbnail image of the presentation to open the PPS file.
