How to Export a List of Categories from WordPress
By Brandy Alexander
Exporting a list of categories from your WordPress blog can be confusing because there isn't an obvious way to do this; however, your Dashboard does offer a built-in tool that automatically performs this task. Exporting categories is especially useful if your business is switching over to a new site, or if you just want to have a copy of important data on your computer. The WordPress "Export" tool creates an XML file of the content you designate so you can conveniently upload it during another WordPress installation or view it in your spreadsheet application.
Log in to your WordPress account, click the "Tools" link on the Dashboard and then click the "Export" option in the drop-down list. This action brings you to the "Export" page where you have the option to create an XML file for your blog's posts, pages or all of your site's content.
Click the "Posts" button to choose the option that includes your blog's categories in the export. You also have the option to select the "All Content" button, but this option creates a lengthy download that contains all features of your site including comments, custom fields and navigation menus. Click the "Download Export File" to generate your XML file and save it to your computer.
Launch Microsoft Excel or an XML editor application and open your XML file in this program. Find the column that contains your list of WordPress categories, and then delete the remaining columns that contain other content (unless you want to save them as well). Save your file.
