How to Disable the Spam Filter in Gmail

By Naomi Bolton

The spam filter in GMail is generally effective and prevents unwanted spam messages from appearing in your inbox. With the spam filter enabled, GMail detects spam messages, moves them to the Spam folder and automatically deletes them after 30 days. This could, however be problematic if you regularly receive bulk emails for business purposes, such as messages that include supplier lists or other important documents. Since GMail has no native way to disable the spam filter, the only workaround is to disable it via the filters feature. All mail will then be sent to the inbox, even messages that normally would end up in the Spam folder.

Sign in to your GMail account and click the gear shaped Settings button. Select "Settings" from the drop-down menu and then click the "Filters" tab.

Click "Create a new filter" and then click the "Has the words" text input box.

Enter "is:spam," "in:spam" or "label:spam" (without the quotation marks) and then click "Create filter" with this search. The "is:", "in:" and "label:" criteria will never match any incoming mail, so this is useful to bypass the spam filter.

Click "OK" and then click the check box next to "Never send it to Spam."

Click the "Create filter" button. All emails that would previously have been sent the Spam folder will now remain in your inbox. Note that GMail displays a warning message if you open an email in your inbox marked as spam.

Tips

Alternatively, create a new filter with your own email address in the "To" field and then set it to "Never send it to Spam." This means that all emails addressed to you will automatically go into your inbox, and never the Spam folder.
