The ODS file type is associated with the Apache OpenOffice and StarOffice spreadsheet programs, and the XLS file type is associated with Microsoft Excel. You can convert an OpenOffice spreadsheet to an Excel-compatible format using the menu commands in Apache OpenOffice. Conversely, if you are using Excel, an add-in for the Microsoft Office suite is available that will give you the ability to open and convert ODS file types to XLS files.

Convert Using Apache OpenOffice

Launch the Apache OpenOffice application. Click on the “Open a Document” icon in the Welcome screen.

Select “Spreadsheets” from the “Files of type” drop-down box. Highlight the document that you want to convert and click the “Open” button.

Click “File” on the application toolbar and choose “Save As” from the context menu. Select “Microsoft Excel (.xls)" from the “Save as Type” drop-down box. Click the “Save” and “Keep Current Format” buttons.

Convert Using Microsoft Excel

Download the OpenXML/ODF Translator add-in for Microsoft Office from the Sourceforge website (link in Resources). Install the add-in and reboot your computer.

Open Microsoft Excel. Click the “Office” button in the upper left corner of the program window.

Click “ODF” and then click “Open ODF” from the menu. Highlight the ODS file that you want to convert to the XLS format and click “OK.”

Click the “Office” button. Click “Save As” and choose “Excel 97-2003 Workbook” from the menu.

Type a name for the file in the Filename field. Click “Save.”
