How to Add a Site to McAfee SiteAdvisor to Test a Website
By Nick Davis
A free service that tests a website for viruses and other malware, McAfee SiteAdvisor keeps a database of potentially dangerous websites and warns you if you are accessing a risky website. You can also submit new websites to McAfee SiteAdvisor for checking and adding to the service’s database via the McAfee SiteAdvisor website.
Before receiving feedback on a website tested by McAfee SiteAdvisor, you need to register as a SiteAdvisor reviewer. A reviewer is able to post comments about websites within SiteAdvisor forums and receive test results on websites reviewed by SiteAdvisor. Registering for an account is completely optional. To register, navigate your Internet browser to the “SiteAdvisor Reviewer Sign-up” link (see Resources), complete the prompts under the “SiteAdvisor Reviewer Sign-up” heading and then click the “Register” button. Navigate to your email’s inbox and open the email from McAfee SiteAdvisor and click the link below the “To complete your registration, please click this URL:” heading to confirm your registration. You also don’t have to be a registered member of the service to submit one or more websites. But if you are a registered SiteAdvisor member, you can obtain site reports and comments about submitted websites from other members. There are no limits on the number of websites you can submit for review by McAfee SiteAdvisor
To add a site to McAfee SiteAdvisor for testing, open your computer’s Internet browser and paste the SiteAdvisor link (see Resources) into the browser’s address bar. Copy and paste the website address you want to submit to SiteAdvisor after the forward slash -- “/.” For example: "http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/XXXX.com" includes “XXXX.com” as the website’s URL address. Press “Enter” to send the website’s address to SiteAdvisor and receive a report about the site. For a website that has never been tested by McAfee SiteAdvisor, you will not receive a detailed report about the site on the next screen. If the site has been tested by the service, you will receive a report stating whether the website is safe to access or contains malware and is dangerous to access.
Requesting a Review
Click the “Request a Review” button to submit the website for review and log the website within McAfee SiteAdvisor’s database. The “Request a Review” screen loads. Click the down arrow under the “Rating” heading and click how you would rate the website: “Safe,” “Caution” or “Warning.” Click the Web elements present on the website under the “Categories” heading: “General News,” “For Kids,” “Games” or other category. Enter any comments you have about the website in the box under the “Write your comments here (optional):” heading. Enter the characters you see in the box under the “Enter the characters you see:” heading. Click the “Submit” button to submit the website for review.
If you are a SiteAdvisor Reviewer, you can log into the SiteAdvisor website and view the status of submitted websites, including if the websites have been reviewed by McAfee SiteAdvisor and the date the websites entered the McAfee SiteAdvisor’s database. You can also post additional comments about the websites you have submitted, view website information that other reviewers have submitted and view comments about websites logged in the McAfee SiteAdvisor’s database. SiteAdvisor reports also contain detailed information about the elements present on the submitted websites as well as the websites’ threat levels: “Safe,” “Caution,” “Warning” or “Unknown.” If you are not a SiteAdvisor Reviewer, you cannot log into the SiteAdvisor website and receive reports on submitted websites.
