How to Highlight on a PC Kindle

by Aramenta Waithe

Amazon's Kindle software allows the PC to interface with the portable reading device of the same name. Although the primary purpose of the PC Kindle software is to transfer books to the Kindle reader, some users have caught on to the fact that the Kindle software displays books on its own, allowing them to enjoy content without actually owning a Kindle. The PC software also shares the highlighting functionality of the portable reader, allowing you to draw attention to your favorite passages in the books that you read.

Step 1

Double-click the "Kindle for PC" shortcut on the Desktop or Start menu to load the Kindle software.

Step 2

Double-click the book that you want to open.

Step 3

Click and drag with the mouse pointer to select the text that you want to highlight. As you highlight the text, it darkens slightly.

Step 4

Release the mouse button. A pop-up menu appears.

Click "Highlight" to highlight the selected text.

Tips

  • Click "Add Note" instead of "Highlight" after selecting a passage in a book to type a text annotation to go with the highlight.
  • The Kindle software has the ability to display book passages that other users highlight often. To enable this feature, click "Tools" and "Options." Click "Annotations" on the left side of the window, and then click "Display the passages that are most frequently highlighted by other Kindle users."
