What Is the Google Talk ActiveX Plugin?by Michelle Miley
Google Talk is a browser plug-in that allows users to chat in real time via instant messaging or VOIP (voice over internet protocol). File transfers and conferencing features are also available. The Google Talk program is free and available in 13 languages.
Google Talk works with Microsoft’s Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Server 2003. In addition to these Windows operating systems, Google Talk is also available for the iPhone, Blackberry and T-Mobile’s G1.
Gmail users will find that their stored Gmail contacts have been automatically added to their friends list upon logging into Google Talk for the first time. Voicemail and the ability to access a chat history are additional Google Talk features available only to Gmail account holders.
A computer with an internet connection is all that Google Talk users need to chat and send instant messages. In order to take advantage of Google Talk’s free telephone service, however, a microphone and speaker are also needed. Google recommends using a headset for optimal voice quality when making calls.
