Garmin Nuvi Tutorial

by Tricia Lahl

Garmin Ltd. manufactures and sells Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation units. Nuvi is the name of Garmin's vehicle navigation product line. Garmin has made about 10 different Nuvi series, but they all have the same basic features and set-up. Nuvi uses a touch screen; all control of the features and GPS unit is managed through soft keys, except the power button. The power button is the sole physical control button and is most often located on the top edge of the GPS unit.

Creating a Route

1

Locate and press the "Where To?" button found on the main menu page. The icon has a picture of a magnifying glass on it.

2

Tap a category icon. The number of categories depends on the model of Nuvi you have. Older Nuvi's have fewer categories, while newer series have more choices. The basic choices are "Address," "Food," "Lodging," "My Locations" "Fuel," and "Spell Name." The category you pick depends on how you want to search.

3

Pick a sub-category if any are available. If not, chose a destination from the list that pops up by pressing on the name.

4

Press the green "Go" button. The Nuvi will calculate your route. Follow your route to your destination by listening to the voice prompts and viewing the highlighted route on the map page.

Saving Your Location

1

Touch the map screen. An arrow will pop up and show your exact location. A box will show the location information including your map coordinates.

2

Tap "Save." You location will be saved under "Favorites."

3

Search for your saved location anytime you want to return there by tapping "Where To," then "My Locations." Press "Favorites," and scroll through the list of choices that turn up. Press the green "Go" button

Using The Map Page

1

Touch the text bar that runs across the top of the screen to view a list of upcoming turns.

2

Tap the plus sign to zoom the map view out. Touch the minus sign to zoom in. On some models, the plus sign is on the upper-left side of the screen and the minus sign is on the upper right. Newer models put both signs on the upper-right side.

3

Tap the swirling arrow in the lower-left corner to return to the main menu. Not all models have this button. Some models have a "Menu" button in the bottom center of the screen.

4

Tap the icon in the lower-right corner to access the trip computer page. On some models, the lower-left icon is the speed limit while other models show the miles until the next turn. The trip computer page shows the trip statistics, such as average speed, distance traveled and time elapsed since the start of the trip.
