WordPad is a basic word processor for Windows. While it doesn't have as many features as its pricey cousin, Microsoft Word, you can format an APA paper in it. APA style is a type of formatting used when writing academic papers; it is usually used in the social sciences, such as psychology or sociology. APA formatting can be complex, but there are templates available with pre-formatted papers you can use in WordPad instead of formatting your paper from scratch.

Step 1

Download the APA RTF template from the Wright State University website.

Step 2

Start WordPad.

Step 3

Click the WordPad button, then "Open" and browse your computer for the file you downloaded in step 1. Click "Open" when you have located the file.

Step 4

Click the "WordPad" button and then click "Save As." Click "RTF" and then type a name for your document into the "File name" text box.

Click the "Save" button. WordPad is now ready to use with APA formatting for your paper.

  • If you have trouble locating the downloaded RTF file, click the "Windows" button on your computer and then type "apatmp" into the "Search" box. Right-click the file in the search results and then click "Properties." The location of the file will be shown, which is often in the "Downloads" folder on your computer.
