How to Figure out if Your Laptop Can Burn CDs

by Michael Butler

If your laptop has a CD or DVD drive that does not automatically mean that it has the ability to burn CDs. The optical drive has to have burning hardware to burn discs. Your laptop manual will tell you if your computer can burn CDs. However, if you do not have access to the manual you can find out if your laptop can burn CDs by checking what CD drive you have.

Step 1

Click the Windows "Start" icon.

Step 2

Click "Control Panel".

Step 3

Click "Hardware and Sound".

Step 4

Click "Device Manager".

Click the arrow next to "DVD/CD ROM Drives". You will see what make and model of optical drive you have. You can now go to the manufacturer's website to see if your drive can burn CDs.

  • You can also find out if your laptop can burn CDs by checking your laptop manufacturer's website or by inserting a blank disc into your CD drive and trying to burn a disc.
