How Fast Is My Comcast Connection?

by Thomas Lourdeau

To the naked eye, it is almost impossible to determine the speed of a given Internet connection, and yet this information is often required for those wishing to play online games or download large files.

The speed of your Internet connection depends largely on the plan you have purchased from Comcast. Currently, Comcast has plans ranging from Economy (384 kilobytes per second download and 1.5 megabytes per second upload) to Performance Plus (up to 16 megabytes per second download and 20 megabytes per second upload. If you are unsure which plan you currently have, consult your latest bill.

The quality of your equipment also influences speed. For example, you will experience greater speeds over a wireless connection by using a wireless N router as opposed to a wireless G or B router. Also, having multiple computers consistently connected to your network will have a negative effect on the overall speed.

Test Your Speed

A good way to know the exact limits of your connection is to test it yourself. There are many free tools online to accomplish this, and the vast majority only take a few moments. After the test is complete, you will receive a readout detailing your exact upload and download speeds.
