How to Enable USB Drives

by Mikhail Polenin

To use a USB flash drive or external hard drive, you must first enable it in your operating system's device manager. Most devices that you plug into your computer enable by default once they run. If you previously disabled a drive, or a program you run disabled it automatically, your computer's device manager lists it as a disabled device with a red "X" marked on the device icon.

Click on your "Start" menu and click "Control Panel."

Click the "System and Security" link then click the "Device Manager" link under "System."

Right-click your USB drive and click "Enable." This enables your device, which can be accessed via "Computer" within the "Start" menu.
