How to Eject an iPod Before Disconnecting From iTunes
By Morgan O'Connor
When you plug your iPod into your computer, the iPod automatically begins to charge and to sync with iTunes. Your iPod's screen keeps you updated as to its progress in terms of both syncing and charging. You should not disconnect the iPod from your computer while it is actively syncing with iTunes, but may do so even if the iPod has not reached its full charge. After it is done syncing, the iPod provides a message stating that you should eject the iPod before disconnecting it.
Step 1
Open your iTunes program. The option to eject your iPod is contained within iTunes rather than on the iPod itself.
Step 2
Locate your iPod in the list of "Devices" on the left side of iTunes. You should see the name of your iPod along with a picture of a battery that shows your iPod's current charge level. Just to the right of the picture of the battery, you should see another icon. This one looks like a blue circle containing a triangle pointing upward located over a rectangle.
Step 3
Click on the blue circle icon. This is the eject button, and clicking on it ejects your iPod.

Tips
- You can also eject your iPod in other ways. Click on the iPod in the list of devices on the left, then click "Controls," then "Eject 'Your iPod'" where "Your iPod" is the name of your iPod, such as "John's iPod." Alternatively, you can eject it by opening "My Computer" or "Computer" (depending on your version of Windows). Find your iPod in the list there, right-click on it and click "Eject." If you absolutely must disconnect your iPod when it still says you should not do so--such as in the middle of a sync--this is the method you should use.
