How to Download SQL Server Management Studio

SQL Server Management Studio Express is a free tool from Microsoft that works as a graphical interface for the SQL Server Express database software. Using SQL Server Management Studio Express, you can perform some of the most common tasks needed in SQL Server Express without having intimate knowledge of the software. Some of these tasks include creating scripts and managing the different queries that clients on the network use to search the database for information. You can download SQL Server Management Studio Express from the official Microsoft website.


Go to the download page for SQL Server Management Studio Express using the corresponding link in the Resources section for the version of SQL Server Express that you are using (2005 or 2008).


Scroll near the bottom of the window and click the "Download" button corresponding with the the type of operating system that you are running (32-bit/x86 or 64-bit/x64). Save the resulting file to the desktop. The remainder of this article describes the 32-bit version of SQL Server Management Studio Express for SQL Server Express 2005, but the installation process for the other versions is similar.


Double-click the file "SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi" on the desktop when the download is finished. Click "Next" when the SQL Server Management Studio Express installation window appears.


Read the terms outlined in the license agreement for SQL Server Management Studio Express. To proceed with the installation, click "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and then click "Next."


Type your name and, if applicable, the name of the company that owns the SQL server that you will be accessing. Click "Next" twice and then click the "Install" button. The installation utility unpacks the required files and copies them to the installation folder on the hard drive.


Click "Finish" when the installation process is complete. You can launch the program by clicking the shortcut in the "Microsoft SQL Server 2005" folder in the Start menu.


  • check If you are running the full edition of Microsoft SQL Server rather than Microsoft SQL Server Express, you do not need to download SQL Server Management Studio Express. The full version of SQL Server Management Studio is included with Microsoft SQL Server.
