How to Download an FLV File

by Mitchell White

FLV is the main format for Flash Video. FLV files are often used in streaming websites like YouTube. These streaming FLV sites normally work so that you can only watch the videos on them in your Web browser while you're connected to the Web. In order to download an FLV file to your computer from such a site, you'll need to use a special tool on a website or in a program that lets you capture the file.

Navigate to ConvertFiles (see "Resources"). This website allows you to paste in your streaming video address and then create a link to a downloadable version of the FLV. It's completely free to use.

Download and install the free program YouTube Downloader (see "Resources"). The program automatically pastes in any YouTube website that you copy to your clipboard. The "Download" button then lets you get the FLV file. The downside is that this only works for YouTube videos.

Visit Zamzar (see "Resources"). Once you paste your FLV website address into this site, it lets you email yourself a copy of the FLV file. The site limits you to only downloading about 100 MB worth of a video.
