by Cameron Easey

A DAT file can be in many different formats depending on the application used with the file. This type of file can contain data such as text, audio and video which is typically used by a specific program. If you do not know what type of program uses a DAT file you can attempt to open or play the file to see what it contains. You can open or play a DAT file with programs such as Notepad or Microsoft Media Player.

Open with Notepad

Click on the Start button and then select "Programs" or "All Programs." Go to the Accessories Program Group and select "Notepad."

Click on the File drop down and select "Open."
