How Do I Play a DAT File?

A DAT file can be in many different formats depending on the application used with the file. This type of file can contain data such as text, audio and video which is typically used by a specific program. If you do not know what type of program uses a DAT file you can attempt to open or play the file to see what it contains. You can open or play a DAT file with programs such as Notepad or Microsoft Media Player.
Open with Notepad
Click on the Start button and then select "Programs" or "All Programs." Go to the Accessories Program Group and select "Notepad."
Click on the File drop down and select "Open."
Locate the DAT file on your system and the click the "Open" button.
Wait for the contents of the file to be displayed on the screen.
Play with Microsoft Media Player
Double-click the Windows Media Player icon on your desktop.
Click on the File drop down and select "Open."
Click the down arrow for the Files of Type option and select the "All Types" option.
Locate the DAT file on your system and the click the "Open" button. Wait and see if any audio or video is being played.

Tips
- A DAT file that is on a Video CD can be played with Microsoft Media Player.
- An error will occur with Windows Media Player if you try to play a DAT file with no audio or video.
Warnings
- DAT files that are large in size will take a long time to open in Notepad.
