Alltel is now part of Verizon Wireless, which purchased the company in June 2009. Alltel is taking the Verizon name; you may still see some Alltel stores, but they are slowly being closed. Alltel is not accepting new customers. If you would like to get a cell phone contract with Verizon Wireless, you must pass the credit check. If you have bad credit, you may be required to pay a deposit. If the deposit is too high, you can consider pre-payment options. Verizon does not disclose to the public its credit rating threshold to determine credit worthiness, but obtaining a cell phone contract through Verizon can be possible even if you have bad credit.

Apply for cell-phone service by visiting or calling customer service at 800-256-4646. Because Verizon does not state a minimum credit score or list the credit criteria for contract approval, you do not know if you will get approved unless you submit an application. You may be pleasantly surprised. Even if other cell-phone carriers have denied you, you still have a shot. Once you complete the short application, you will have an approval or request for a deposit within minutes.

Apply through a third-party site, such as Wirefly offers the latest Verizon phones for a fraction of the cost. If you plan to spend $100 on a phone at a Verizon store, try getting a free Verizon phone through Wirefly. The large discount on a phone can compensate for paying a deposit. You can use the money you would spend on a phone toward the deposit instead. If you decide to pay the deposit, make your payments on time for a year and Verizon will credit the deposit amount to your account.

Ask someone to co-sign. People with bad credit often have relatives or even friends with a better credit rating co-sign their credit applications. If you are unable to make your payments, the co-signer will be responsible. You will need to find someone who will trust your ability to make timely payments. You should also consider having a family member add you to his or her account as an authorized user. Verizon offers a variety of plan options for accounts with multiple lines.

Prepay until your credit rating improves. If you have cannot afford a deposit or find someone to co-sign, a prepaid phone plan with Verizon is your last resort. Verizon offers two different prepaid options for customers. You can pay a daily or monthly rate. Prepaid daily rates start at 25 cents a minute or 99 cents per day, with an additional 10 cents per minute for nights and weekends. Monthly prepaid plans start at around $50 a month.
