Disk Defragmenter Won't Work

by Tyran DeWalt

The Disk Defragmenter repairs fragmented files so your PC can run more efficiently. If this tool is not working, you can repair it using the native tools on your computer. Issues such as a corrupt registry and missing files can cause the Disk Defragmenter to malfunction. Luckily, only a few steps are needed to fix this tool.

Click "Start" > "Computer." Right-click "Local Disk (C:)" and select "Properties."

Click the "Tools" tab and select "Check Now." Click "Continue" when the User Account Control prompt appears. Place a check by both of the check disk options and click "Start."

Select "Schedule disk check." Restart your PC. Allow the tool to scan and repair the Defragmenter. Proceed to Step 4 if these instructions don't correct the problem.

Click "Start." Type "rstrui.exe" in the "Search" field and press "Enter" to launch the System Restore tool. Select a restore date and click "Next." Restart your PC.

Click "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "System Tools" > "Disk Defragmenter." Make sure the Defragmenter is working properly.
