How to Disable a Laptop Camera

by Tammy Clevenger

Many laptops are shipped with built-in cameras, or "webcams." Webcams are great for video conferencing and snapping quick photos of objects in range of the laptop. However, users may wish to disable the camera on their machine. Parents may wish to implement additional security for their children by disabling the webcam. To disable an external webcam, simply unplug the USB cable for the device, from the computer. The built-in camera on a laptop may be disabled from within the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Click the Windows "Start" button and then click "Control Panel."

Click the "Hardware and Sound" option.

Click the "Device Manager" option.

Click on the "Imaging Devices" option and then click on the laptop camera listed.

Click on the tab labeled "Driver."

Click the "Disable" button. Click "OK." The laptop camera is disabled.
