How to Disable Acrobat Reader

by Stephen Lilley

If you think that Adobe Acrobat Reader seems to be opening on your computer automatically without you telling it to, that's because by default, that is exactly what the program is supposed to do. During installation, Acrobat Reader sets itself to load automatically when Windows starts. While this can make PDF files open quicker on your computer, this can be taxing on your system resources and can drastically slow down older machines.

Click "Start."

Click "Search." Type "MSCONFIG" and click on its program icon to load the MSCONFIG utility.

Click "Startup."

Click inside the checked box next to "Adobe Acrobat Reader." This will remove the check, leaving an empty box.

Click "Apply." This will disable Adobe Acrobat Reader from loading on start-up.
