Does DirecTV Have On-Demand Like Comcast Does?by Amanda Johnson
Comcast's On-Demand features allows customers to watch television programs and movies at their convenience. From new releases to TV reruns, customers are able to watch their favorite programs using On-Demand services. DirecTV offers a similar on-demand service called Cinema. Like Comcast's On-Demand, Cinema offers movies and TV programs for customers to watch at their convenience.
Cinema offers a wide variety of movies and TV shows. DirecTV offers movies that are out in the theater, and movies on DVD when they become available. Customers like Cinema because they don't have to leave the comfort of their own home to find a movie at the local rental store. Cinema's movies also come out almost a month earlier than movie-streaming competitors like Netflix. Cinema allows customers to select movies and shows based on a genre or channel. Pay-per-view movies are available to customers for a 24-hour period only and free movies are always available.
Cinema is free to DirecTV's customers. However, as of summer 2011, Cinema movies that are playing in the theater cost $29.99. New releases range from $4.99 to $5.99 and some older movies run anywhere from 99 cents to $4.99. Movies and shows that are offered on your regular satellite TV programming are free. Cinema works with an Internet connection. If you use wireless Internet, the connection kit costs $25 and installation by a DirecTV professional costs $49.
How to Get Cinema
Cinema works with an Internet connection. For professional installation, call 800-531-5000 to schedule an appointment. A connection kit can be ordered on DirecTV's website or by calling 800-531-5000, if you do not want to pay the installation fee. To use Cinema, connect the provided Ethernet cable to your HD-DVR and the wireless adapter. Plug the provided power cable into an outlet. Your wireless connection will be recognized and a message will be displayed on-screen to finish the installation.
How to Use Cinema
After your wireless adapter is installed, you can test connectivity by pressing the "Menu" button on your remote. Select "Parental, FAVs & Setup" and continue to "Network." Press "Connect Now."
