How to Design Two Story Homes With Sweet 3D

by Daniel Ketchum

Sweet Home 3D is a freeware application that can be used to design 3D models of rooms and houses. The program is somewhat limited compared with some commerce applications. For example, you cn't directly design a multi-story home in the program. However, you can use the program to create separate files for each floor of the home. The process for doing this is simple.

Start the Sweet Home 3D application.

Select the "Create Floor" tool from the top. Click on the top view to where you want one edge of the foundation. Continue clicking to add all the corners. The tool shows the length of a line as well as the angles. It also shows when two lines are lining up by displaying a dotted line between them.

Select the "Create Walls" tool from the top. Double-click on one of the corner points of the floor to automatically create the outer walls. Then begin clicking to add the inner walls. The tool provides the same information as the floor tool.

Go to the folders on the left and drag into the house the furnishings you want. In the panel on the lower left you will see a list of the items you have added. You can double-click on any of these to bring up a dialog to change attributes such as size and color.

Select "File" from the menu and choose "Save." In the dialog, name your file and save it. Repeat this process to design the second floor of the house.
