How to Delete Browser History Through a Registry (12 Steps)

All Internet history is automatically saved in the computer's registry. The web browser stores history by file names associated with the website visited. A url1 file will be reserved for a specific domain name. The file will contain dates, hours and individual web pages visited on that website. Web browser history can be deleted through the Registry Editor, which is a Window feature that allows computer management. Individual websites or the entire history can be deleted, depending on the computer user's needs.

Step 1

Click the "Start" icon.

Step 2

Type "regedit" in the search box and hit "Enter."

Step 3

Double-click the "Registry Editor" icon.

Step 4

Double-click the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder to open it. The folder is located in the left side window.

Step 5

Double-click "Software, " "Microsoft" and "Internet Explorer" folders.

Step 6

Double-click the "TypedURLs" folder. A list of visited websites will appear in the right side window.

Step 7

Right-click the "url1" file. Visited websites will be numbered as url1, url2 and so on.

Step 8

Click the "Delete" option. Click "Yes" to confirm that you wish to delete the file.

Step 9

Select multiple entries by clicking on a file name. Hold down the "Shift" key and click on a different file name at the same time.

Step 10

Right-click on the selected objects and click "Delete." Confirm that you wish to delete multiple files at the same time.

Step 11

Click the "X" icon to exit Registry Editor.

Step 12

Open up a new web browser window to confirm that the history has been deleted.
