Winamp is a digital music player that plays a variety of music file formats. One common music file format that Winamp can play is the WAV format. This format is lossless and uncompressed, typically resulting in a large file size. MP3 files, on the other hand, are compressed audio files, much smaller than WAV files. Using Winamp, you can convert your original WAV files into MP3 files.

Step 1

Download and install Winamp Standard, a free application, if you don't already have it. See “Resources” for a link to download the program.

Step 2

Open Winamp and load the WAV file you want to convert. To do this, click “File," then "Open,” then navigate to and choose the WAV file.

Step 3

Change the encoding settings in Winamp by clicking "File," then "Preferences." In the Preferences dialog choose "Plug-ins/ Output." In the output encoding settings choose "Nullsoft Disk Writer." Finally, click "Configure" and choose "Mp3" as the output format.

Step 4

Press the "Play" button on Winamp. When the file plays, it will automatically be encoded into an MP3 file.
