How to Convert SXC to XLS

by Jamie Lisse

If you have an SXC spreadsheet that you need to use in Microsoft Excel, then you will need to convert that SXC file to an XLS file. You cannot do this conversion in Microsoft Excel. To convert an SXC spreadsheet to an XLS spreadsheet you will need to open the document in Open Office to convert it to an XLS document. Open Office is similar to Microsoft Office, and you can easily convert SXC to XLS in Open Office.

Download and install Open Office. Visit the Open Office website (see Resources) to download and install Open Office. Open Office is a freeware program suite that is similar to Microsoft Office. You will not have to pay to use or keep Open Office.

Open the SXC file. Launch Open Office, and click "File" and "Open" to select the SXC file that you want to convert to XLS. SXC is the file type for an Open Office spreadsheet.

Check the version of Excel. Before you can convert the file you will need to know which version of Excel the file will be used in. There are two XLS file options in Open Office; one is for Excel 95 and one is for Excel 97/2000/XP. If you are unsure of which version you will need, you should use the Excel 97/2000/XP version.

Save as XLS. Once you have opened the file in Open Office, click "File" and "Save As." Then select XLS as the file type to convert the file to an XLS file. Pick either the Excel 95 or the Excel 97/2000/XP XLS type. Click "Save."

Test the new file. Open the new XLS file in Microsoft Excel to test it out and see if it will open correctly. If you have any problems, try saving the file for a different version of Excel, which should correct any compatibility problems you might be having.
