Connecting a remote to a TV requires a clear path so the TV can receive the signal the remote lets out during the programing process. Universal remotes use 3-digit codes to sync to different TVs, but not all the codes listed will work. You must complete a process using different codes if the first try doesn't work.

Step 1

Hold down the program button on the remote control for 3 seconds. This button mighty be displayed on the remote as "PRG." When you have done this, the LED light on the remote control will turn on. The light will remain on for the remainder of the programing process.

Press the "TV" button on the remote control to let the remote know it will be syncing with a TV. Universal remotes have multiple device buttons that let you connect other devices, such as the VCR and DVD player, to the remote. Having the TV properly programed under the "TV" button makes it much easier to switch back and forth from another device to the TV.

Find the proper codes for the TV you are programing. You will find a link with a list of TV codes in the Resources section below. Input the 3-digit code into the remote and press "Enter." If the code took, the light will turn off and the TV will turn on after pressing the "Power" button. If the light remains on, stand closer to the TV and move any objects that are blocking the signal from the remote to the TV, then start the programing process from Step 1 and continue down the list of codes until it works.
