How to Configure a Zyxel Modemby Eoghan McCloskey
Typically, an Internet-service provider configures the modem as part of the general install process, but if you find yourself in the position of having a modem that has not yet been configured, the ZyXEL brand of modems makes the configuration process simple enough that it can be achieved by the least tech-savvy among us in just a few steps.
Attach the ethernet cable from the ethernet port on the ZyXEL modem to the ethernet port on your computer.
Open an Internet browser and type "192.168.1.1" into the address bar and press "Enter." You see a popup window requesting a user name and password; depending on what model of ZyXEL modem you are using, the default password is either already in the password field or you need to type "1234," the default password for most ZyXEL modems. You are redirected to the modem's Web configuration page.
Configure the modem for your Internet service. This process will depend heavily not only on what type of Internet service you are using but also on your geographic location and on which specific model of ZyXEL modem you are using. If you have any questions at any point in the configuration process, contact your ISP representative and have her walk you through the process or download the User's Manual for your specific modem (See Resources) and follow the manual's instructions for configuring the modem.
