Comcast Vs. Verizon High Speed Internetby Charlie Sim
Comcast provides broadband Internet service, which can be faster and pricier, while Verizon provides DSL high speed Internet service, which is slower than Comcast though may be fast enough for some users, and cheaper in price.
Broadband and DSL Hardware
Comcast offers broadband Internet service that uses the cables that are already in place and fed through your home. Broadband technology allows data to be sent faster through existing cables while DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) provides data through telephone networks.
Speed Comparison Between Comcast and Verizon
Comcast boasts download speeds up to 15 Mbps and uploads up to 3 Mbps with PowerBoost as of early 2010. Verizon currently has three tiers of speeds, with the fastest being download speeds up to 7.1 Mbps and upload speeds up to 768 Kbps. Verizon's starter option claims download speeds up to 1 Mbps and pload speeds up to 384 Kbps.
Price Comparison Between Comcast and Verizon
Comcast and Verizon offer promotions from time to time. Comcast's base price is $42.95 per month without a contract for current Comcast subscribers. With a promotion, it can be as low as $19.99 for the first six months. Verizon's base price is $19.99 per month with a one-year contract, but includes a free modem and/or wireless router, as a promotion. With a promotion, Verizon also offers six free months of DSL service.
Other Fees and Availability
Comcast charges a monthly fee for using one of its modems, or changes a one-time fee for users who purchase the modem. Users, however, can use their own modem if it is one of the compatible modems that Comcast has listed on their website. With Verizon, modems are given free. Availability of Comcast and Verizon internet services depend on region, but in some cases, even if Verizon provides landline phone service, DSL service cannot be served to some regions.
With Comcast, users are granted seven e-mail accounts with 10 GB of storage each. Comcast also provides free services, such as photo hosting, web site building, virus protection and other online and entertainment services. Likewise, Verizon provides many of the same free services as Comcast, in addition to nine e-mail accounts, a free modem and wi-fi access to Verizon hotspots.
