How to Clone a Hard Drive Using a Dock Station (6 Steps)

Creating a "clone" of a hard drive is creating a full backup of all the files and folders contained on the drive. This will afford you the equivalent of a "do-over" in the event of system failure, allowing you to quickly bring your system back online. You can easily create a clone of your drive onto an external hard drive utilizing your laptop in conjunction with a docking station.

Step 1

Plug your laptop into a docking station.

Step 2

Attach the external drive's USB cable to an available USB port on the side of the docking station.

Step 3

Right click on the "Start" button and select "Explore."

Step 4

Right-click on the letter of the drive to be cloned and select "Copy."

Step 5

Click on the drive letter of the external drive.

Step 6

Right-click in the right hand pane and select "Paste" to clone the drive.
