How to Change the Format on Embroidery Designs

by Kellyn Goeken

Machine embroidery can be a useful and rewarding pastime. You can use the craft to enrich your own life, and give the finished projects as gifts. Occasionally, you might get a design file that isn't in the right format for your embroidery machine. If you have an Internet connection or a little money for a special program, you can quickly convert that design into the right file format.

Convert an Embroidery File Online

Search your favorite search engine for a website that will convert embroidery files for you. Sites such as EmbroideryDesigns.com and Data7Consultancy.com do this for free.

Upload the file that you need converted, following the website's instructions.

Save the new file to your computer when you receive it from the conversion service. You may wait as long as a few days, or as little as a few seconds. Some companies can convert files instantly, while others have to do it manually.

Insert the file into your machine and do a test stitch-out to ensure proper conversion.

Convert an Embroidery File With a Program

Open the conversion program of your choice. Data7Consultancy.com has a free trial of embroidery conversion software for download, as does Embird.com.

Open the file you need converted.

Save the file in the correct format by clicking "Save As" and selecting the correct format in the drop-down menu.

Insert the file into your machine and do a test stitch-out to ensure proper conversion.
