Using Facebook chat, you can place and receive video calls. If you do not have a webcam, you can still use the video call system to talk to online friends using your microphone. Additional software, powered by Skype, but downloaded directly from Facebook, installs on your computer, giving Facebook this feature. While engaged in a call, you can still use Facebook normally.

Step 1

Click "Chat" in the lower right corner of Facebook to display the Facebook chat window. Select an online friend, one with a green circle next to his name.

Step 2

Click the "Start A Video Call" camera icon to open a new pop-up window. Click "Install" in the Set Up Video Calling pop-up.

Follow the on-screen instructions for downloading the file. Navigate to the file's location on your computer and double-click the .exe file to run it. When the automatic installation finishes, your video calling session begins in the Facebook window.

  • Your friend must also have the software installed in order to complete your call.
