Can Someone Put You in a Relationship on Facebook?by Kefa Olang
Adding a Facebook relationship status on your timeline is optional. If someone declares that he is in a relationship with you -- such as an engagement or marriage -- you can choose to either confirm the relationship or waive confirmation. No one can simply put you in a relationship on Facebook without your consent or approval.
Facebook Relationship Statuses
If you are friends with someone on Facebook, he can put you in a relationship; however, you must accept and confirm the relationship before the update can appear on both timelines. Facebook protects your privacy, and therefore, no one can claim a relationship you may or may not approve of.
Confirming a Relationship
Facebook provides a privacy option to confirm or disapprove a relationship someone has put you in. To confirm a relationship, click the "About" me link on your profile and click the "Edit" button in the "Basic Info" section. In the Basic Info box that opens, locate the Relationship section. In this section, you can select from relationship statuses such as "In a relationship" or "Engaged." If you select either of these options, Facebook displays a new box to confirm who you are in the relationship with.
Hiding a Relationship Status
Like several other Facebook settings, the audience tool provides options to configure your relationship privacy setting. Once you are in a confirmed relationship, you can choose to hide it from everyone on your friends list, specific people or everyone on Facebook. If you open the Basic Info box again, you should see the audience tool next to the "Relationship Status" drop-down menu. If you click it, Facebook displays a variety of privacy options such as "Only Me," "Friends" and "Public." Choosing the "Public" option allows anyone on Facebook to see your relationship status. If you select the "Friends" option, only the people on your friends list will see the relationship status update. You can also make the update visible only to you, or a specific group of people.
Removing a Relationship Status
If a relationship is complicated, problematic, or ends all together, you can update your current relationship status at anytime or remove it all together. The process of removing a relationship status is the same as confirming a new one; you must go back to the Basic Info box to delete a relationship status.
