Can You Send Somebody a Message on Facebook Without Being Friends With Them?
By Aaron Wein
Depending on a person's privacy settings, you may not be able to view much of anything on his Facebook profile if you aren't friends with him. As long as you can find a person, however, you can send a private message to him. This feature comes in handy if you want to check in with someone before sending a friend request, possibly to confirm the person's identity. It can also be helpful to get to know a person before befriending them on the social networking website.
Step 1
Log in to Facebook and navigate to the person's profile page.
Step 2
Select the "Message" button.
Step 3
Type your message into the "Write a Message" field.
Step 4
Select "Send" to send the message to the person.

Tips
- You can also send a message from your inbox. Select "Messages" in the left-hand pane after logging in to Facebook to open your inbox. Select "+ New Message" and type the name or email of the person you want to message. Type your message and choose "Send."
- Depending on a person's message settings, he may receive your message in the "Other" folder if you aren't friends with him, decreasing the chance he'll read the message.
- You can search for people by typing a person's name in the "Search for People, Places or Things" field.
