How Can I Get a Phone Number From Someone That Keeps Calling & Hanging Up?

By Tara Dooley

Prank phone calls and harrasing calls are unpleasant and can leave you feeling vulnerable. One way to combat this feeling is to find out as much about the caller as possible so that you can decide what you want to do. Your first step is to get the person's phone number. There are a variety of ways to get this basic piece of information.

Look at the phone display. If you are on a landline phone with a digital display, the phone number might automatically show up when you answer the phone. Some phones require caller id for this to work, especially if you do not look at the display before the person hangs up.

The number will normally show up on most cell phones, so look at your cell phone display.

Scroll through the phone's recent call memory if you didn't look at the screen display before the caller hung up. For landline phones, you might need to check your user manual, but usually there are up and down arrow keys on the phone. Push the arrow buttons and phone numbers should show up on the screen if you have caller id. Scroll through until you see the one stamped with the date and time of the phone call.

For cell phones, go to the recent calls section of your phone and look at the most recent number, which is normally at the top.

Hang up the phone after the person calls if you do not have caller id or do not have a screen display on your landline phone. Once you have hung up, pick up the phone and dial *69.

Listen to the machine voice after dialing *69. It will give you the last number to call your landline phone as long as the number isn't blocked.
