Can I Convert an Illustrator File to InDesign?

By Elle Smith

Adobe Creative Suite CS5 offers a full range of industry-standard graphics programs included in its software suite. InDesign, the page layout program, supports a wide range of graphics formats for content, including the vector format .EPS, which is an Illustrator-created file. The EPS format preserves many of the elements that are created in Illustrator, which, when placed into an InDesign document, is linked as part of the InDesign document, and effectively becomes part of the InDesign file.

Step 1

Open the Illustrator file you want to place into the InDesign document, and select "File" from the main menu, then scroll to "Save As." Type a file name into the "Save As" text field, then click the pull-down menu next to "Format." Choose "Illustrator EPS" as the file format type, then click "Save."

Step 2

Open a new InDesign document by selecting "New," then choose "Document" from the "File" menu.

Step 3

Select "Place" from the "File" menu. Navigate to the previously saved "EPS" file, then click "Open." The Illustrator file is now part of the InDesign document.
