Blurry images can be caused by a number of issues and understanding the cause can help you to clear up the image. Learn about the types of image blur and available apps to fix blurry images on PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
Types of Image Blur
Fixing a blurry photo first requires that you determine the type of blurry image that you are dealing with. There are three main types of blur that can often be fixed with software.
Motion blur occurs when your camera’s optical stabilizer does not do its job in stabilizing a rapidly moving picture. Part of the image appears streaked as a result of this. These images tend to be easier to fix with apps that use automatic shake pattern analysis technology.
Defocused images are harder to fix as the entire image and its primary subject are blurry. Some programs are able to at least make the image readable, although the quality of it may still be poor depending on how defocused it is.
Gaussian blur is caused by using a software program to blur every pixel of the image to a set pixel value. These are artificial blurs produced by programs like Photoshop, GIMP and other photo editors. They are usually easier to reverse than defocused images.
Blurry photos may be improved or completely fixed with a number of Windows PC apps or programs. Free options include Unshake and RobustMotionDeblur. Paid options for making photos clear include SmartDeblur, Focus Magic, DeblurMyImage, Blurity, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. All of these options have varying degrees of success depending on the type of image blur found in your photo.
Mac offers less apps for making pictures clear but still has a number of good paid options. These include Movavi, SmartDeblur, ArcSoft PhotoStudio and FocusMagic. All programs are able to fix the three types of image blur mentioned above, although very blurry images may not be fixable.
You can fix or greatly improve many types of blurry images with several iOS apps. Free iOS apps that can make images clear include Adobe Photoshop Express, Photo Editor+, Magic Photo Editor FX and Photo Editor Pro. Paid iOS apps that may fix image blurriness include Camera+, LightX and ProCamera. These programs primarily help reduce blur in images by allowing you to sharpen the photo which makes it clearer.
There are quite a few Android apps available that enable you to sharpen blurry photos. Free Android apps to make pictures clearer include AfterFocus, Photo Blur, Pixlr, Enhance Photo Quality and Adobe Photoshop Express. Paid Android apps to fix blurry images are Deblur It, AfterFocus Pro, Perfectly Clear and Afterlight. As with iOS apps, these programs primarily fix blurry images by enabling you to sharpen the photo.
