How to Delete an Email Account on an iPhone

by Kristina Barroso ; Updated February 23, 2018

The days when you could only send an email from a computer are gone. Thanks to your trusty iPhone, sending and receiving email messages from the palm of your hand is a breeze. Sometimes, though, even the tech savvy user might struggle with things like deleting an email account, deleting emails in bulk or adding a new email account on an iPhone.

Deleting an Email Account on an iPhone

If you are no longer using a particular email account or no longer want the account on your phone, follow the steps below.

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars (a single icon that appears with all three together).
  3. Select the account you want to delete.
  4. Select Delete Account.

Deleting Emails in Bulk from an iPhone

Since following the steps below will purge all of your emails at once, check for any messages that you would like to keep and move them to a different folder before you begin the purging process.

Go to the inbox of the email account you want to delete messages from.

  1. Select Edit.
  2. Select Mark All.
  3. Select Mark All as Read.
  4. The Edit mode will automatically close.
  5. Select Edit again.
  6. Select the top message in the inbox.
  7. Using your thumb, press and hold the Move button.
  8. While holding the Move button, unselect the top message and release the Move button.
  9. The Move screen will appear.
  10. Select the Trash folder, and all of your messages will move there.

Creating a New Email Account on an iPhone

Before you begin the process of adding a new email account to your iPhone, make sure to have the email address, password, incoming mail server and outgoing mail server for the account you want to create. Check the settings or preferences section of your email account to determine the mail server information. An example of an incoming mail server might look like "imap.gmail.com," and an example of an outgoing mail server might be "smtp.gmail.com."
