Send faxes quickly with a computer and an Internet connection, instead of relying on a bulky fax machine. Send a free fax with one of the programs in Windows 7, Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate. If this program is not available on your system, then refer to the Internet for one of many free resources. In both cases it is possible to complete the process in a few minutes.

Ensure that your computer is configured to use "Windows Fax and Scan." It must have an external or internal fax modem connected to an analog telephone line. According to Microsoft, you cannot send a fax with a digital phone line. External modems plug into a USB port, while internal modems connect to the motherboard inside your system. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to install the equipment properly.
Set up the fax modem. Click the "Start" button at the bottom of your screen and type “Fax” into the search box. Click on “Windows Fax and Scan” on the list of results. This produces the “Windows Fax and Scan” dialog box.
Click “Fax” at the bottom of the left panel in the dialog box. Click “New Fax” on the toolbar at the top of the window. This produces a "fax setup" box.
Click “Connect to a fax modem.” Follow the onscreen directions to complete the setup and send a fax with your modem.

Visit an online fax service provider, such as FaxZero, GotFreeFax and MyFax.
Type your information and the receiver’s information in the appropriate fields. This includes such details as name, email address and fax number.
Click the “Choose File” button to upload the file you wish to fax. Some websites, such as MyFax, accept any document file type. Others, like FaxZero and GotFreeFax, accept only .doc or .pdf files. You also can type the information you wish to send into the blank field provided.
Click the “Send fax” button to complete the process. Some websites provide this service free for a small number of pages. If you are sending more pages than the limit required, you must pay for the service. You can pay with a credit card or Paypal, where it is an option.
