Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a mail transmission protocol that is often used to govern the sending of email. To send email from your AOL account on your iPad, you must first input the correct details for AOL's SMTP service into the iPad's configuration menu. If your iPad holds the wrong SMTP server address or user credentials for your AOL account, it will be unable to connect to AOL's servers, leaving you unable to send mail from the device.

Tap “Settings,” and then select “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” to open a list of all the mail accounts you have set up on your iPad.

Select your AOL email account from the list.

Tap your account's name to access the Account page, and then tap “SMTP” to open the SMTP setup page for that account.

Tap the server name listed in the Primary Server field to open the server edit page.

Enter “” (without quotes) into the Host Name field.

Enter your AOL username and password into the User Name and Password fields, respectively.

Enter “587” (without quotes) into the Server Port field, and then tap “Done” to save your changes.
