Instagram is a popular app for sharing photos and videos online, either directly through the Instagram app or as a way to upload content easily to other websites like Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter. Instagram is a free app, but it's only available on smartphones and phonelike devices such as the Apple iPad. You need an email address and Internet access to create an account and start uploading your own content.

Getting the App

Before using Instagram, you need to install it on an iPhone or iPad, Android phone or Windows phone. Instagram is a free app available from the app store on your device. After you install the Instagram app, launch it and select the "Register" option. Enter a username and password and set up your profile, including your name and email address. When you have entered this information, select "Done" and begin using the app.

Profile Details

If you want to add or edit details in your Instagram profile, you can do this within the app at any time. Just tap the "Profile" button, located in the bottom right corner of the app and select "Edit Your Profile." Here, you can edit your full name and your username, as well as your profile picture. Instagram also gives you options for adding a website link and a bio line. On this same screen you can make your posts private, meaning only the people currently following you can see your posts. While this is turned on, you need to approve new follower requests before new people can follow you.

Finding Friends

Using Instagram by yourself isn't much fun. To find your friends on Instagram, tap the options button, which looks like three vertical dots on an Android phone and looks like a gear on an iPhone. On the next screen, you can select an option to find friends. You can find friends from your phone's contact list or from your Facebook account. When you find a friend, tap the "Follow" button beside the person's name. Their posts will appear on your home screen whenever you launch the app.

Uploading Pictures

Tap the "Instagram" button at the bottom of the app to upload photos from your phone's camera or to take live photos and videos directly within the app. After you take a photo or record a video, the app gives you a chance to review it, edit it or add a filter before posting it online, so if you don't like the shot, you can delete it and try again. Instagram also gives you the option to upload your photos and videos directly to other social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr, or to share your creations with others via email.
