What Is the Best ePSXe Full-Screen Filter Setting?

by Alexis Rohlin ; Updated September 22, 2017

The ePSXe is a PlayStation emulator for Windows and the iPhone. Plugins are additions to the video-game console emulator that can increase its graphics-rendering and sound-producing capabilities. The full-screen filter setting of the ePSXe is enhanced with the use of graphics plugins, most of which can be downloaded for free. With the use of plugins, you can get the best setting possible for the ePSXe full-screen filter setting.

Screen Filter Plugins

Screen-filter plugins improve the 3-D model textures of the game sprites and enable anti-aliasing, smoothing out the sharp corners of the polygons that are used to make the 3-D characters. When used in conjunction with custom plugin shaders, the filter makes a picture with stronger colors and blends in some of the shades to hide the hexagonal 3-D model flaws that were common in classic PlayStation games. The best ePSXe full-screen filter settings can be obtained by using Pete's OpenGL2 PSX plugin.

Shaders

In addition to the screen-filter plugins, you can download and apply a Shader plugin for the ePSXe, such as ePSXe SPU core 1.7.0 and Eternal SPU Plugin 1.41. Shaders create stronger or brighter shade colors in the 3-D graphics of PlayStation games, improving the image of character sprites and background graphics during game play. To enable the shader in ePSXe, click "Configure" and select "Video." Select "Configure Pete's PSX OpenGL Renderer" and then click the box next to "Shader Effects" to select it. Select the shader effects from the drop-down menu, such as "3: ARB program" for Pete's OGL2. For the best shader settings, select "4" for the Shader level and select "Yes" for "Use pixel shader for 'PSX texture window' emulation."

How to Use

Download Pete's OpenGL2 PSX GPI v2.08 plugin for free from Pete's Domain at Pbernert.com. Use WinZip to extract the plugin files and save them in the plugins folder located in the ePSXe folder on your computer. Saving the files there helps the emulator quickly find the files and utilize them when you change your filter settings.

Configuring the Filter

Start the ePSXe emulator. Click "Config" and select "Video." Select "Pete's OpenGL Driver" and then click "Configure" to open "Configure Pete's PSX OpenGL Renderer." While in "Configure Pete's PSX OpenGL Renderer" click the circle next to "Fullscreen mode" to select it. Click the arrow of the "Desktop resolution" drop-down menu to expand it and select the manufacturer's recommended resolution for your computer monitor, such as "1920 x 1080." Type "1440" and "1080" into the "Window size" text boxes. Check the box next to "Use Window size in Fullscreen mode" by clicking on it. Select "2" for "Internal X resolution," "Internal Y resolution" and "Stretching mode." Set Texture Filter to "4." Change the "Hi-Res textures" number to "2." Click the box next to "Screen filtering" to apply the full-screen filter and get the best graphic settings for your ePSXe.
