How to Use the Xbox Controller for "MapleStory"

Items you will need

  • Xbox controller USB adapter

  • JoyToKey

  • Xpadder

  • Pinnacle Game Profiler

Having the ability to play "MapleStory" with an Xbox controller will add variation to your gameplay style and allow you to perform various button combinations with ease. Since the original release of "MapleStory" in 2005, the game has amassed a player count of more than 90 million. "MapleStory" does not have built-in game controller support, but with the use of specialized software this can be accomplished. By downloading the proper drivers and using a game keyboard emulator, you can play "MapleStory" with an Xbox controller.

Using JoyToKey

Remove the "Standard" Xbox attachment that is connected to the end of the Xbox controller and replace it with the USB attachment. Plug the controller into your computer via the USB attachment.

Visit the official Xbox Controller Driver website and download the latest driver for the Xbox controller (See Resources). After the download has completed, run the software. The installation wizard will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions, then restart your computer.

Visit the official JoyToKey website and download the latest version of the software (see Resources). Once the download is complete, open the software. Allow it to fully load.

Click "File" located in the top left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear. Scroll down and select "Create New Configuration File." Type a name for the configuration into the blank text field, then click "Okay." A list of buttons ranging from 1 to 10 will appear.

Become familiar with the button layout. On an Xbox controller that has been interpreted by JoyToKey, the buttons are arranged as follows:

Button 1: "A" Button 2: "B" Button 3: "X" Button 4: "Y" Button 5: "Left" button or "White" Button 6: "Right" button or "Black" Button 7: "Back" Button 8: "Start" Button 9: "Left" joystick button Button 10: "Right" joystick button

View the default "MapleStory" keyboard layout. Map the "MapleStory" keyboard layout onto the Xbox controller. Click one of the buttons that appears in the JoyToKey window. A virtual keyboard will appear. Select the keyboard button that you would like to correspond with the selected controller button. For example, if you would like the "MapleStory" world map to appear when you press your controller's "Start" button, map the "M" key onto "Button 8." Map the keys for each button until none remain.

Minimize the JoyToKey window Open the "MapleStory" game client. Allow the game to fully load. You will now be able to play the game using an Xbox controller.

Using Xpadder

Your controller will be automatically detected. Click the icon of a controller located on the main navigation bar. A drop-down menu will appear. Select "New." A new window will appear.

Click the tab labeled "Dpad." Check the box labeled "Enable." A window will appear. Press the buttons on your controller's D-pad that correspond with the arrows that appear in the window. Click the tab labeled "Buttons." Press each button on the Xbox controller. A box representing each button should appear in the "Buttons" window. Click the "Finish" tab, then click "Close."

View the default "MapleStory" keyboard layout. Map the "MapleStory" keyboard layout onto the Xbox controller. Click one of the buttons that appears within the "Xpadder" window. A virtual keyboard will appear. Select the keyboard button that you would like to correspond with the selected controller button. For example, if you would like the "MapleStory" world map to appear when you press your controller's "Start" button, map the "M" key onto the button that becomes highlighted when the controller's "Start" button is pressed. Do this for each button until none remain. Minimize the Xpadder window. Open the "MapleStory" game client. Allow the game to fully load. You will now be able to play the game using an Xbox controller.

Using Pinnacle Game Profiler

Remove the "Standard" Xbox attachment that is connected to the end of the Xbox controller and replace it with the USB attachment. Plug the controller into your computer via the USB attachment.

Visit the official Xbox Controller Driver website and download the latest driver for the Xbox controller (See Resources). After the download has completed run the software. The installation wizard will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions then restart your computer.

Visit the official Pinnacle Game Profiler website and download the latest version of the software (see Resources). Follow the on-screen installation instructions then run the program. The New Device Setup Wizard will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Click "Game Profiles" located in the top right corner of the screen. A window will open. Click the "Game Profiles" tab. A list of options will appear. Select "New." The "Game Profiles Wizard" will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Select the "Profile Information" tab. A list of options will appear. Click "Edit Configurations." Minimize "Pinnacle Game Profiler." View the default "MapleStory" keyboard layout and become familiar with the layout. Minimize the window. Maximize "Pinnacle." Click the "Command Assignments" button. Map the "MapleStory" keyboard layout onto the Xbox controller. Open the "MapleStory" game client. Allow the game to fully load. You will now be able to play the game using an Xbox controller.

Tips

The keyboard emulation software must be opened each time the computer starts up.
