In "Fallout 3" and "Fallout: New Vegas," the Pip-Boy 3000 is the main character's most important tool. In addition to controlling the inventory, displaying the map, playing music and allowing the character to use the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, the Pip-Boy can also function as a makeshift flashlight. This can be very useful when exploring caves, subway tunnels or abandoned Vaults.
Activating the Pip-Boy Light
To activate the Pip-Boy 3000's light, hold down the button or key you would normally tap to activate the Pip-Boy. On the Xbox 360, this is the "B" button, while on the PlayStation 3 it's the "O" button. PC players should press and hold the "Tab" key to activate the light. To turn it off, press and hold the same button or key again until the light switches off.
Drawbacks of the Pip-Boy Light
The Pip-Boy light is handy for seeing in the dark, but it lets others see you in the dark as well. If you're trying to sneak, enemies will find it much easier to see you if your Pip-Boy's light is turned on. This applies even if you're wearing armor that gives you a Sneak bonus, or even if you have a Stealth Boy activated. If you want to avoid detection, make sure your light is switched off. If you find yourself having to switch your light on frequently, you may need to adjust your screen's brightness setting.
