How to Make a Check Mark in Adobe Illustrator

by Suzanne Smith Dickinson ; Updated September 28, 2017

Adobe Illustrator is an easy to use program that allows you to create and alter common icons and "digbats," such as a check mark. You can easily add a check mark to your illustration or create one to export for use in just about any program. Illustrator allows you to create vector images and icons that can be resized without losing any quality or resolution and allows you to save your work in many formats.

Creating a Check Mark

Open a new document in Adobe Illustrator. In the tool bar, click on the type type tool. In the menu bar, choose Type then Font and choose Zapf Dingbats.

Click into your document so the cursor is blinking in Type mode. In the menu bar, select Type then Glyphs. Locate the check mark and double click on it in the Glyph box. The check mark will appear on your document.

Click on the Black Cursor in the Tool Box then click on the check mark to reveal the bounding box. Resize as needed by pulling at the corners of the bounding box by clicking and holding on a resize box and dragging it with the mouse. You can also use the pop-up Dialog box and enter specific size values.

With the check mark bounding box still active, choose Type in the Menu Bar and select Create Outlines. The bounding box will disappear and an outline appears around the check mark. The check mark can now be exported for use in another program or can be adjusted to suit your needs.

Tip

  • If you can't find a check mark in the Illustrator Glyphs, most computers include a collection of key stroke shortcuts for icons or an installed Glyph option that includes Dingbats. Check your operating system manual to access these options.
