How to Add Groups to the Contacts in an iPhone

Apple's iPhone smartphone device comes with the "Contacts" application preinstalled. This application organizes the contacts stored on your iPhone device and lets you quickly navigate through your contact information. The application does not, however, let you organize contacts into groups directly on the iPhone. If you want to organize contacts into groups, you will need to sync your contacts with a computer and place the contacts into groups with the computer's contact application.
Mac
Connect the iPhone to the computer via the USB connection cable that came with the device. Double-click the iTunes application icon to launch the application.
Click the iPhone beneath the "Devices" heading in the iTunes application window. Click the "Info" tab and place a checkmark next to the "Sync Address Book Contacts" option. Click the "Apply" button to sync the iPhone contacts to the Address Book application.
Click the "Finder" icon on the computer's dock, followed by the "Applications" folder. Double-click the "Address Book" icon to launch the application.
Click the + button beneath the "Groups" heading to create a new group. Type a name for the group in the space provided and drag the contacts that you want to be in this group into the group folder. Repeat for any other groups.
Click the "Info" tab in the iTunes application window and scroll down to the "Advanced" heading. Place a checkmark next to the "Contacts" option to replace the contact information on the iPhone with the contact information on the computer. Click the "Apply" button to sync the contact groups you created in Step 4 with the iPhone.
PC
Connect the iPhone to the computer via the USB connection cable that came with the device. Double-click the iTunes application icon to launch the application.
Click the iPhone beneath the "Devices" heading in the iTunes application window. Click the "Info" tab and place a checkmark next to the "Sync Contacts From" option and select "Outlook" from the drop-down menu. Click the "Apply" button to sync the iPhone contacts to the Microsoft Outlook application.
Double-click the Microsoft Outlook icon to launch the application. Click the "Contacts" tab to view the application's contacts.
Click the "Contact Group" button to create a new contact group. Type a name for the group in the space provided. Click the "Add" button to add a contact to the group. Repeat for any contacts that you want to add to the group. When you are finished, click the "Save and Close" button to save the group.
Repeat Step 4 for any other contact groups you want to create. When you are finished, click the "Info" tab in the iTunes application window and scroll down to the "Advanced" heading. Place a checkmark next to the "Contacts" option and click the "Apply" button to replace the contacts on the iPhone with the contact groups created in Outlook.
