How to Backup the Photos on Your iPhone

by Jason SpidleUpdated September 28, 2017

Photos on your iPhone can be backed up to your computer by transferring the pictures from the device to your Windows Photo Gallery on a PC or iPhoto on a Mac. Moving the photos to your computer makes it easier to manipulate the photos in photo editing programs or put the photos on external media such as CDs, DVDs or a flash drive. The backup process is similar to transferring photos from a digital camera and only takes a few minutes.

Windows

Connect the iPhone to your computer using the USB cable that came with the device.

Click "Import pictures and videos" when the AutoPlay dialog box appears. If the AutoPlay dialog box does not appear, click "Start" and then double-click "Computer." Right-click the iPhone device and then select "Import pictures and videos."

Add tags to the photos and then click "Import." Photos will be stored in the Windows Photo Gallery.

Mac

Connect the iPhone to your computer using the USB cable that came with the device.

Launch iPhoto.

Select your iPhone from the "Device" section in the iPhoto sidebar.

Select the photos you want to back up to your computer, then click "Import Selected." Alternatively, if you want to back up all of the photos on your iPhone, click "Import All."
